Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Psychiatry

The University of Auckland (Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences) is seeking to appoint an Associate Professor/ Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry. 

Are you looking to further your career in Psychiatry?  This part-time academic position will ideally be combined with a part-time clinical component, tailored to the successful candidate, and will ideally suit and be a great opportunity for an enthusiastic psychiatrist who wants to combine a clinical appointment with a university career. This role is particularly suitable for an early to mid-career academic psychiatrist. The anticipated start date for this position is early December 2026.

This opportunity is for a permanent role, part time for 16 hours per week (Associate Professor) or 20 hours per week (Senior Lecturer). The salary range for each academic level are:

Senior Lecturer: $126,863 - $145,741 (fulltime equivalent)

Associate Professor: $165,808 (fulltime equivalent)

Your salary will be determined based on your experience, qualifications, and the level at which you are appointed.

He kōrero mōu | About you

Candidates must hold a medical qualification registrable in New Zealand, must have a higher qualification in psychiatry equivalent to the Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) and be eligible for vocational registration by the Medical Council of New Zealand as a Specialist Psychiatrist. Candidates must have experience in research and ideally hold an MD/PhD or equivalent.  

Essential:

• Registered with the New Zealand Medical Council.
• Hold a current Annual Practising Certificate
• Have vocational registration in Psychiatry (FRANZCP or equivalent)
• Hold professional liability insurance

Preferred:

• MD/PhD Psychiatry
• if no MD/PhD, the candidate should be prepared to undertake doctoral studies part-time if requested by and with the support of the HOD and Clinical Director of relevant service.

The School of Medicine is one of the six schools within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.

The hub is based at Grafton Campus with other clinical campuses in South Auckland, Waitematā, Waikato and Tauranga. In addition, there are clinical sites in Northland, Whakatāne, Rotorua, Taranaki and Hawera.  

The School of Medicine coordinates staff and resources within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences to:

• Deliver the undergraduate medical programme
• Facilitate and encourage clinical and applied research in clinical departments
• Develop and deliver postgraduate programmes in clinical areas covered by the school
• Work in partnership with the School of Medical Sciences, School of Population Health and Medical Programme Directorate to deliver the medical programme

Our school is comprised of eight academic departments:

• Anaesthesiology
• Centre for Medical and Health Sciences Education
• Medicine
• Obstetrics and Gynaecology
• Ophthalmology
• Paediatrics: Child and Youth Health
• Psychological Medicine
• Surgery

A key priority for the School of Medicine is the provision of clinical undergraduate training for almost half of New Zealand’s medical students, as well as postgraduate training for a range of health care workers. We have large and successful research programmes and a strong record of postgraduate research supervision. Many of the our academics contribute to New Zealand’s health outcomes through both direct clinical service and service on many national and international organisations related to health care, including specialist colleges and government agencies.
