Higher education is changing, and the University of Waikato is investing in shaping what comes next. Our commitment to outstanding learning experiences and student success, underpinned by a high-quality curriculum, means reimagining how teaching and assessment are practiced across the University.
The new Teaching Design and Innovation Studio will lead this change, working alongside academic staff to rethink learning design and grow teaching capability. As one of the founding team members, you'll bring your expertise to that partnership and make this a lived reality for every student.
Ngā kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
Reporting to the new Associate Director, Teaching Design and Innovation Studio, you will partner with academic staff to design fair, valid and authentic assessments at programme level, and lead the professional learning that lifts assessment design and moderation practice across the University. You will design assessment approaches that proactively support academic integrity, including task design that responds thoughtfully to AI, provide expert consultation on complex assessment challenges, support programme teams through assessment mapping and moderation and calibration activities, and feed what you learn into University-wide policy on assessment and academic integrity.
This is an opportunity to bring your expertise, influence direction, and make the role your own while contributing to the future of the University's academic portfolio and the success of its students.
The salary will begin at $115,904 pro-rata per year and is negotiable based on skills, knowledge and experience brought to the position. This is a full-time role (37.5 hours a week), based at our Hamilton campus, and supporting academic staff across our Tauranga campus and in international settings.

Ko wai koe? - Who are you?
You are a fair-minded, resilient assessment expert who can navigate sensitive conversations with judgement and care. You hold a master's degree in education, assessment or a related field; a doctorate or formal qualification in assessment design would set you apart.
You will bring:
- At least five years in higher education assessment design and moderation, with expertise in authentic and programmatic assessment and constructive alignment.
- Experience designing formative assessment approaches that support student learning, self-assessment and reflection.
- Experience with academic integrity policy and intervention, including assessment design that responds thoughtfully to AI.
- Competence in moderation frameworks, grade calibration and standards-based assessment.
- Familiarity with assessment research methodologies, applying evidence-informed innovations in assessment practice.
- A demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and mātauranga Māori, and the ability to apply this in your work.
Experience leading institutional assessment reviews or policy development, or a research background in assessment or academic integrity, would each be an advantage.
