Within the Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies, the School of Future Environments brings together teaching and research focused on the environments we design, build and inhabit. Our technical team supports this work through specialist facilities, equipment and practical expertise that help staff and students turn ideas into practice.
The Opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi
We are seeking an experienced Technical Services Manager to lead day-to-day technical operations in Built Environment, including the Construction Lab. Reporting to the Senior Manager – Technical Services, you will combine practical technical expertise with people leadership to provide safe, reliable support for teaching, research and approved commercial projects.
You will coordinate staff and resources, support complex technical work, and work closely with academic colleagues to plan delivery around changing requirements. Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading and developing technical staff through clear priorities, coaching and constructive feedback.
- Providing specialist advice, demonstrations and practical support to students, researchers and staff, including the construction and installation of research and client projects.
- Coordinating equipment procurement, maintenance and repairs, and advising on the design and use of technical spaces.
- Leading local health, safety and wellbeing practices, including risk controls, induction, training and emergency readiness.
- Managing loan-out operations and the SISO inventory management system, and leading commercial projects as required.
You will collaborate with Estates, HSW, Finance, suppliers and industry partners, and act as a delegate for the Senior Manager during absences. Through inclusive leadership, equitable access to technical support and ongoing cultural learning, you will help give practical effect to Te Aronui, AUT’s Te Tiriti Framework.

You are an experienced technical professional and people leader who enjoys working alongside a team. You can resolve complex technical problems, manage projects and priorities, organize competing demands and build effective relationships with students, academics and professional colleagues. You bring sound judgement, financial literacy and a practical approach to improving services.
You’ll also bring cultural humility and respect for Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Indigenous peoples and diverse communities. Experience supporting Indigenous, equity or inclusion-focused initiatives is highly valued.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A relevant undergraduate degree with extensive subsequent relevant experience.
- Substantial experience in a relevant technical setting, with extensive knowledge of equipment used in built environment laboratories or related technical facilities.
- Experience managing or supervising technical teams, coordinating resources and supporting staff development.
- Project management experience and the ability to analyse complex technical problems and develop practical, innovative solutions.
- Knowledge and experience of implementing health and safety requirements in a technical environment.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and digital skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- A commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, and to supporting AUT’s Te Aronui journey.
A postgraduate qualification, a first aid certificate and extensive specialist experience in one of the School’s technical fields are desirable.
