Position Overview

Lead one of New Zealand’s most diverse university farming operations.

Ko wai mātou | About us

Massey University is a world-class, Tiriti-led institution with a proud history of excellence in agricultural education and research. Massey Agricultural & Horticultural Enterprises (MAHE) is a key business unit within the School of Agriculture and Environment, managing over 2000 hectares of farmland across eight budget centres. These include dairy, sheep and beef, deer, and horticultural operations that support teaching, research, extension, and industry engagement.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role

We are seeking an experienced and visionary General Manager to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight of our MAHE units. Reporting to the Head of School, you will manage a team of dedicated farm and professional staff and play a pivotal role in aligning farm operations with Massey’s academic, research, and commercial objectives. Your focus will span farm performance, staff development, health and safety, financial planning, innovation, and stakeholder engagement—ensuring that Massey’s land-based enterprises remain at the cutting edge of agricultural practice and education.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | What we're looking for

You will bring:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in agriculture, science or business—or equivalent farm leadership experience.
  • At least five years’ experience managing multi-site farm operations.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • A deep understanding of both practical farming and strategic planning.
  • Proven financial and business acumen, including the development of three-year business plans.
  • Familiarity with farm systems data, regulatory compliance, and health & safety best practice.

Why Massey?

Join a mission-led, future-focused university that is shaping the next generation of agricultural leaders. Massey offers a collegial and supportive environment, competitive staff benefits, and the chance to make a lasting impact on Aotearoa New Zealand’s primary industries.
