Position Overview

The School of Food Technology and Natural Sciences (SFTNS) at Massey University is seeking a Safety Management Technician to support the unique work of the Cetacean Pathology Unit (CPU). Based on our Albany campus, this permanent part-time 0.2 FTE (7.5 hrs) position plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with laboratory and field-based safety standards, particularly in relation to marine mammal research.
About the role | Mō te tūranga
Reporting to the Zoology & Ecology Group Lead, you will provide safety compliance and technical support across field and laboratory activities. This includes managing hazardous substances, maintaining safety documentation, coordinating emergency response plans, supporting live stranding responses, and liaising with key partners such as iwi, the Department of Conservation (DOC), and internal compliance teams.

To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A relevant bachelor’s degree with laboratory and fieldwork experience.
- A full, current New Zealand driver’s licence.
- Demonstrated laboratory and hazardous substance management experience.
- Experience handling marine mammals and conducting safe fieldwork operations.
- Strong understanding of Tikanga Māori and willingness to work respectfully with iwi partners.
- Preferably, a current First Aid certificate.
