Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We are seeking applications for a 12-month contract for a Pou Arataki to lead the development, mentoring, delivery and evaluation of an academic mentoring/support programme for ākonga Māori in their first year of an undergraduate programme ensuring academic quality and culturally affirming pedagogies and practices. In collaboration with the equivalent role  for our tangata moana AUT whānau (the Puleako), the Pou Arataki will lead a team that prioritises ākonga Māori academic mentoring but also extends that support to ākonga Pacific. This partnership will grow culturally enriching communities of learning and practice for our undergraduate Māori and Pacific ākonga, inspiring participation and engagement with their programmes and wider support services and enabling ākonga to realise their academic aspirations.

Ou Haepapa mahi | Your Responsibilities

  • In partnership with tangata moana AUT whānau design and deliver a culturally affirming academic mentoring programme for first-year undergraduate ākonga Māori and Pacific through 1:1 consultations, small groups, and online resources.
  • Liaise with Faculty kaimahi and wider AUT services to create, update, and develop academic mentoring services, workshops and development resources to enhance student learning.
  • Identify and develop new resources that facilitate students academic development.
  • Lead and empower the team of 3 direct reports to provide a tikanga Māori-based mentoring service across campuses and online.
  • Promote equity and diversity through culturally affirming practices.
  • Set clear team expectations, offer mentorship, implement annual, and development plans aligned with individual and business needs.
  • Develop, implement and refine an evaluation framework and monitoring and reporting processes to understand the experience of ākonga and kaimahi engaging with the service, analyse the efficacy of service delivery, and ensure good practice in data governance.

  • Hold a postgraduate qualification (ideally with a Māori specialisation and/ or teaching specialisation).
  • Be able to work independently and collaboratively lead a team of 3 direct reports.
  • Have proven experience in leadership, mentoring and development.
  • Be diplomatic, open to change, and driving positive changes.
  • Be confident in te reo Māori me ngā tikanga Māori.
