Position Overview

The Wildbase Hospital provides the highest quality of veterinary care to NZ native species from the Manawatū region and around the country. The hospital is always looking at ways of improving patient care and enhancing learning opportunities for students while advancing knowledge of the native species of Aotearoa.

Our Wildbase Recovery rehabilitation aviaries are an exceptional facility that continues the care of native patients beyond the hospital, to get them fit for release back to the wild. The Wildbase Hospital functions alongside the Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital to provide health care to owned exotic bird and reptile patients.

We are now seeking applications for the full time (37.5 nominal hrs/wk) role as a Wildlife Technician within the Wildbase Hospital based in Palmerston North.

As a Wildlife Technician you will work as part of a small team providing hospital, nursing, and rehabilitation care for patients across the Hospital and the Recovery facilities. The role also includes assisting with the maintenance of the native wildlife pathology service in collaboration with the Department of Conservation and oiled wildlife emergency response developed in collaboration with Maritime New Zealand.

The successful applicant will have:

  • A current full driver’s license.
  • A degree/diploma in veterinary nursing or veterinary technology.
  • Enthusiasm, motivation, ability to show initiative.
  • Basic IT skills and willingness to learn new systems.
  • Well-developed communication skills.
  • A demonstrated interest in avian health, conservation management, or wildlife husbandry.

Previous experience in an exotics or wildlife hospital is highly desirable but not essential as training will be provided. The salary range for this role is $48,596 - $71,027 (NZD) based on skills and experience.

Enquiries about the specific duties of the position can be e-mailed to Dr Megan Jolly, Senior Practicing Veterinarian, Wildbase, [email protected]
