The opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi

Tāwharau Ora, the School of Veterinary Sciences at Massey University, Palmerston North, invites applications for a practicing veterinarian within the Small Animal Hospital of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. This is an opportunity to interact with over 20 faculty members in the Small Animal Hospital, a class of rotating small animal interns, and residents from the anaesthesia, and ECC services. It is a 0.8 FTE position at 30 hours per week so you can enjoy a balanced career with your own life pursuits.

You will be part of a rotating roster, involving daytime, evening and weekend shifts. There are no scheduled overnight shifts. There is also an opportunity to work alongside the specialist team during the weekday shifts to improve your skill set in areas of your choice. We encourage ongoing professional development and internal and external opportunities are available.

About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga mahi

We provide 24/7 emergency & critical care for veterinary clinics throughout the wider Manawatū-Whanganui region. Our emergency service is primarily focused on the delivery of clinical services to clients, supporting our rotating interns, and clinical teaching to undergraduate veterinary students. Our AVMA-accredited veterinary programme is world-renowned, providing quality, research-led education. The successful applicant will provide high-quality veterinary care as part of a collaborative team of specialists, vets, nurses, interns, and students.

You will get to interact with the surgery, medicine, radiology, and anaesthesia services. We also utilize the greater Massey VTH resources including digital radiography, in-house computed tomography, flexible and rigid endoscopy, full ultrasound suite, fully equipped and staffed ICU, Idexx in-house laboratory, and on-site clinical and anatomical pathology laboratories, oncology suite, full surgical suites, and out-sourced magnetic resonance imaging at a local medical facility. Journal Club, interdisciplinary rounds, staff seminars, in-house CPD, and study towards HEA fellowship are all strongly encouraged.

The Salary Range for this role is at a Practicing/Senior Practicing Veterinarian grade (for 2024), ranging from $81,172-$143,949 (NZD). Salary will be negotiable by background/experience.

Ideally, you will have at least TWO years of clinical experience, to work in our Pet Emergency Centre. We are looking for an enthusiastic professional who possesses excellent communication skills, is self-motivated and has a passion for education. We are seeking someone who is open to learning, has a desire to teach and shape the next generation of veterinarians, and has a passion for emergency medicine. As part of Massey Vets, you will be involved in the teaching of Bachelor of Veterinary Science students.

Do you have:

  • A Bachelor of Veterinary Science or equivalent and are you registered (or able to be registered) as a veterinarian in NZ? Your veterinary degree must be from an AVMA-accredited school or one recognised by the New Zealand Veterinary Council to enable full registration in New Zealand as a veterinarian.
